The Foundations program is the process of designing a proactive and positive schoolwide discipline plan. The Foundations process addresses how to establish structures for positive school climate and culture, school safety, student motivation, and academic engagement. It is a partnership with the Safe and Civil Schools (SCS) organization, TrueNorth, and participating member districts.
Districts will engage in a 3 year professional learning program that targets school improvement. During this time, each building will establish a Leadership Team (including a building administrator) with heavy representation of general education teachers. During the training process, schools will commit to the following:
- Leadership Team must meet regularly (approx 1x/month).
- Leadership Team attends 8 days of Foundations trainings in Years 1 and 2; and 4-8 days in Year 3
- Leadership Teams will need opportunities to share training information and decision-making with entire staff.
Outcomes:
Over the course of this multi-year program the Foundations process guides school staffs through designing a proactive and positive schoolwide discipline plan that addresses:
- Discipline policies and procedures
- School climate and culture
- School safety
- Student-staff interactions
- Student motivation
- Academic engagement
Who Should Attend: Building leadership teams designed to support Tier 1 MTSS-Behavior within elementary and high school districts. Membership of these teams should include an administrator (e.g. Principal) and heavy representation of general education staff as well as representatives of other stakeholders in the building (e.g., support staff, paraprofessionals)
Satisfactory completion requirements:
- Attendance is based on your signature in and out of the session. Failure to provide a signature in and out will result in no credit.
- Participants are expected to attend all of the sessions in the series to earn full credit.
- Participants must complete an electronic course evaluation within two weeks of the session date to be sent a certificate.
- Accommodations, questions and complaints can be directed to: professionallearning@truenorth804.org
Cost Information: Participation fees are waived for TrueNorth employees, TrueNorth member district employees, and parents of students in our TrueNorth member districts. For individual participants who do not meet the above criteria, this course participation fee is $1,200.00. Participation or material fees will be billed directly to the school district that employs the participant after the session is complete or the first session in a series is complete. Individuals are asked to not bring payment to the session.
Cancellation and Refund Information: There is no cancellation fee, though we ask for advance notice to open the spot for another person. TrueNorth reserves the right to cancel any session due to low enrollment. TrueNorth does not charge prior to the start of the offered session. If an individual attends the first day of a learning series but is unable to attend the remaining sessions, the school district that employs the participant is able to designate an alternate person. It is up to the individual no longer attending the program to give their replacement the information learned in the first session.
About the Presenters:
Jeremy Resnick began his career in education as a high school English teacher in his hometown in Southern California. After moving to Texas, he continued teaching in the classroom while also obtaining his administrative credential. Since then, he has been a high school administrator, elementary school principal, and district-level administrator. As an elementary school principal, Jeremy was charged with introducing the CHAMPS approach to his school. The school saw great success with the implementation and eventually became a spotlight school for Safe & Civil Schools. Upon returning to California, he also worked for the County Office of Education as Director, Curriculum and Instruction, where he provided support and professional development on a wide variety of topics such as MTSS (multi-tiered system of supports), Universal Design for Learning, and CHAMPS and Foundations implementation. It was in this role that Jeremy contributed a section to the third edition of CHAMPS on equity in grading practices. He then served as the Senior Director of Equity and Instructional Services, where he was able to combine his passion for meaningful and impactful learning experiences for all students with an unwavering commitment to calling attention to and fostering a data-informed focus on historically marginalized and underserved and marginalized students and communities. He is thrilled to continue this important work as a trainer and writer for Safe and Civil Schools.
